Nelson Carnival - Huge Success

Nelson turned on the weather for what was a hugely successful Nelson Carnival last Saturday the 10th Jan 2026.

A total of 150 athletes were in attendance across seven South Island clubs. A super close competition with the honours ultimately being taken out by North Beach by a slim margin of 3 points over Nelson SLSC.

The day started early with IRB racing in perfect calm conditions. Over 30 IRB athletes on the water competing in Singles, Mass and Assembly races and finishing with Interclub relays. Nelson had four teams including two debut teams; female Masters and Under-23 female. Nelson Open Female managed a win in assembly races. This was the first outing for the new IRB racing engine so a big thanks to the Bobby Foundation for their grant.

Beach events followed shortly after offering-up some exciting competition. As the day progressed the winds increased creating additional challenge for the competitors. This did not dampen spirits with some super close finishes across all age groups and lots of smiling faces.

The day concluded with an amazing fish wrap feast under the shade of the trees. Big thanks to all the helpers refuelling the troops including Fiona Hosie, Jane Alloway, Jayne and Joe from Atkinson Crehan Law and Sealord who provided the fish.

A great turn-out by the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club which for many was their first competitive event. This experience creates a great platform for future success. Fantastic effort by all and especially pleasing to see such great sportsmanship on and off the water.

Big thanks to Dylan Neal-Hill from Surf Lifesaving NZ for co-ordinating the day and all of the on-the-beach helpers. We could not have run the day without you.
